The Ohio American Legion has a number of competent Department Service Officers prepared to assist veterans and their dependents.   Department Service Officers (DSOs) are a vital component in the service network that includes County Veteran Service Officers (CVSOs) and Post Service Officers (PSOs).

Nearly all 610 Posts of The Ohio American Legion have an individual serving as PSO, whose primary duties are to assist in the development of evidence and completion of the necessary forms in a Department of Veterans Affairs (DVA) claim.  The ability of Post Service Officers range from filing claims to referral to the proper agency or assisting the claimant in obtaining the services of the CVSO in their community.

CVSOs are service professionals employed by their respective county government.  CVSOs submit claims to the DVA through Veterans Service Organizations (VSOs), such as The American Legion, which maintain offices at the Regional Office of the VA in Cleveland and cities in other states and countries throughout the world.

DSOs review the evidence and submit it to the DVA on the claimants' behalf.

Appeals, if necessary, are handled in Washington, D.C. by The American Legion national staff, except Traveling Board hearings that may be conducted in Cleveland and other cities outside of Ohio.

American Legion Representation is obtained by completing VA form 21-22, Appointment of Veterans Service Organization as Claimant's Representative.

We encourage claimants to file original claims locally with the PSO or CVSO.  Additionally, veterans at the Cleveland, Dayton, and Cincinnati VA Medical Centers may contact a DSO working there.  We also have DSOs that travel to Chillicothe an and Brecksville VAMCs on a regular basis to provide assistance.   Claims may also be filed at The American Legion Service Office at the VARO and Department Headquarters.
